Newborn FAQs

When should I book a session?

We have had returning clients that literally call me the moment they find out they are pregnant! We don’t expect that amount of lead time – usually, 3 months is a good time to book your session to ensure you get a date on my calendar.

I’m 9 months pregnant / my baby is just born and I didn’t book a session! Can I still book?

Simply give us a call or send us an email to info@janegoodrich.com and we can see if we have room in the schedule for you! Sometimes we have last-minute openings due to a schedule shift.

I’m deciding between an in-home shoot or a studio shoot, which do you recommend?

I strongly recommend the studio shoot. We are perfectly set up for new moms and siblings here. Our lighting is beautiful and I have everything you could want or need during your shoot right here in the studio, from bottle warmers, diapers, and a boppy pillow to a lifestyle set up with a crib and a bed for those lifestyle shots. We no longer offer in home newborn shoots. You can see more about the studio here.

What happens if my baby comes early or late?

We are used to a schedule shuffle as only 5% of babies are born on their due date! We just ask that you let us know if your doctor is moving up your due date or you have had your baby. We check in with you close to your due date to see how things are going!

When is the best age to photograph babies?

Jane likes to photograph babies between 7-14 days as they are still sleepy and curly. We can photograph babies of all ages though – the older they get the more they have uncurled, like to be awake, and are used to a routine so they will be less likely to go into those sleepy poses and are a little fussier on the shoot – so we just have to be more patient.

I have older children, can they be in the newborn shoot?

Yes! Absolutely – we love the sibling shots! Don’t worry about them and how they will be – we have a lot of fun with the kiddies in the shoot. We make sure they are the center of attention and we even have a little play area for them. With siblings added to the mix, we do the family and sibling shots first and then they can go to the playground across the street or with dad to grab some lunch while we do the newborn section of the shoot. Don’t worry – we have a lot of tricks to motivate those tiny humans  They will think it is a playdate and won’t want to leave!

My baby seems to cry a lot, I’m worried about them on the shoot.

PLEASE don’t worry about this. We truly make sure they are happy during our shoot. Jane has photographed over 1,000 babies and our clients call her the baby whisperer. Your baby will be calm and happy on my shoot and you will end up with fantastic shots (and you might get a few new calming tricks during the shoot, too!).

I completely forgot about newborn photos and my baby is older, do you take them?

Yes, we photograph babies of all ages. You just have to keep in mind that they will have uncurled and most likely won’t go into the sleepy newborn poses you see.

What do I bring to the newborn session?

Once you have booked with us, we will send you a prep guide to ensure you have all the information you need to know about before your shoot with us!
