That’s right, only about a week until Christmas – have you completed your shopping yet? If you have a new baby it might be a bit of a challenge (thank goodness for online stores!). But one thing you are certainly looking forward to is baby’s first Christmas and all fun times your baby will have. Just don’t forget to grab the camera and take some photos so you can look back on this holiday season when they move out of the house! Here are a few tips for taking great photos of baby’s first Christmas, and what to do with them:
Who doesn’t love receiving a card with a cute baby on it – especially at Christmas? Kill two birds with one stone by sending a photo of your baby as a Christmas card. It’s pretty easy to do, whether you want to take the photo and order cards online or do it yourself. Here are some ideas for cards. As far as the photo goes, anything goes! It can be inside, outside, on the bed, under the tree (if you put it up early), with a Christmas-y outfit or hat and some garland, or just your cute baby. Get creative with older babies and toss in some Christmas lights, or do whatever you have time for. Use a photo editing software to add some text and you’re done!
Unless you have a very young baby they’ll probably pick up on all the excitement leading up to Christmas Day, they may even try to stay up late to see what all the fuss is about. Keep your camera handy for fun moments – the Christmas Eve bathtime, falling asleep at dinner, or wearing some cute Christmas PJs.
Anything goes on Christmas day, but you’ll definitely want photos of them opening a present or two, playing with toys, etc. If you have any special traditions get those too – even if baby is too young to understand they’ll love looking back when they’re older. At some time over the holidays you’ll also want to head outside to capture some outdoorsy Christmas joy; whether it’s sledding, playing in the snow, or posing in front of the town’s giant Christmas tree!
When you’re taking Christmas photos of your baby outside you’ll probably have no issues with light, particularly if it’s a bright day or there’s snow on the ground. Indoors you’ll want to have some lights on so you don’t have to use flash. If you have a reflector you can use this to balance out light and shadows, if needed you may have to increase your ISO to give you a bright enough exposure. Take lots and lots of photos to remember their very first Christmas and odds are you’ll get at least a few really awesome photos to put in your photo book, send to relatives, or hang on the wall.

A fantastic prime lens perfect for portraits
The lens is suitable for any shooting situation, with a lens coating and construction type that are optimized to minimize the ghosting and flare that frequently occurs when lenses are used with digital cameras.
